RonnieAdventure #0510 - Yosemite National Park, Mariposa County, California

Bridaveil Falls, Yosemite National Park

We were living in Concord (California) in October of 1993 when our two Mothers visited us at the same time, so we decided to take them on a trip to Yosemite National Park.

James Garner, Jodie Foster, and Mel Gibson had just finished shooting part of the Maverick movie in the Park and the fall colors were spectacular. One of the rangers told us that instead of collecting a filming fee from Warner Bros., the rangers worked out an agreement with the movie company to make some much needed improvements to the Park. Apparently, when the Park collects a filming fee, the money goes into the US Treasury and not into the Park's budget. Therefore, rather than collecting a fee, the work directly benefitted the Park. Considering the condition of the National Parks, more parkss should consider this arrangement.

It was getting dark when we arrived in Yosemite. Fortunately, we had made advanced reservations to stay at some "rustic" cabins that were located right in Yosemite Valley (the cabins have since been removed).

We were just going to bed when the Mothers started screaming. I quickly ran next door, only to find that they had left the front door of their cabin open to get some fresh air and a curious racoon had walked in to see if they had any food. Apparently, their screaming scared the racoon because by the time I arrived the racoon was already outside. However, in the morning some deer also stopped by their cabin looking for food.

Our Mothers wanted to see the giant Sequoia trees; so the next day we drove down to Mariposa Grove, stopping at the Wawona Tunnel Overlook for a photograph.
