The hike to Mary Jane Falls is on a well-maintained trail located in the Spring Mountains. Although the hike is relatively short (less than 2 mile one-way), some people consider the hike to be fairly strenuous because of the elevation change. And, during certain times of the year there is actually water that flows in the waterfall. The trail also offers some nice views of the Spring Mountain, which are especially beautiful in the Spring.
Near the falls there is also a shallow cave that kids of all ages like to explore.
Different Hike: Box Canyon is located on an alluvial plain that was created over a long period of time by sediments washing down from the Spring Mountains. The Canyon is difficult to reach and there are no developed trails in the area. A friend of mine had visited the Canyon and enjoyed the hike, so one day we made the journey. Somehow, I don't think I had the same appreciation for the hike that he had.
We found the canyon to be filled with large boulders and brush. After doing a lot of rock scrambling we ended up at a headwall with a permanent wire ladder installed. Using the wire ladder it was possible to climb the headwall and continue up the canyon. (If you look closely, the wire ladder is visible in the picture.) Along the trail there were some fossilized rocks and a number of wild flowers, but I would not recommend this hike to anyone.
