From a distance it appeared that it would really be an easy hike to the top of White Rock Spring Peak and a topographic map indicates the peak was only about 6,300 feet in elevation. Of course, from a distance one does not realize there is no developed trail to the peak and the entire mountain is composed of broken rock with large boulders to climb over or find a way around. And, did I mention that there is a lot of brush to fight your way through, some of which has nasty thorns. Anyway, from the peak there are great views of the area that can not be seen from ground level.
The trailhead starts at White Rock Spring and just a short distance from the Spring there is an Indian earthen pit oven that was used for cooking Agave plants. It is very common to find these ovens around springs in Red Rock Canyon NCA.
Along the way to the peak there were a number of interesting rock formations.
I called this "Fat Man Pass" |
Near the peak there was still snow on the north side of the mountain.
Looking down at part of Red Rock Canyon NCA |
I called this formation "Wolf Head Rock" |
On the way down the mountain one of our group wanted to take a pretty rock home to his grandchildren, but we finally convinced him that it probably would not fit in our vehicle.
