The Las Vegas Arts District, also known as "18b," is an area near the downtown business district that has been set aside for encouragement of the arts. "18b" originally designated an 18 block zone for artist to display their talents, but the area has now expanded well beyond the 18 block zone and continues to expand. Within the area is a mix of independent businesses including art galleries, all types of boutiques, antique shops, restaurants, florists, and various other retail stores.
On the first Friday evening of each month the area hosts a First Friday celebration that includes an eclectic group of artists, art walks, craft demonstrations, local bands, break dancers, acrobats, and other performance artists. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 virus, First Friday celebrations have been cancelled until further notice.
Snowball in Vegas is a public arts project that was designed and sculpted by Jesse Carson Smigel. A placard on the front of Snowball states: "Snowball is a ten foot cat-head cleaning its paw, which is absent so that you, the Visitor, can act out a scenario of getting groomed by a giant feline..."
First Friday visitors come from all parts of the Galaxy!
Even time travelers!
And by all modes of transportation!
Someone was so concerned about keeping Mayors Carolyn and Oscar Goodman safe that they provided masks to protect them from the COVID-19 Virus! Some of the artists also provided graphic images to remind everyone to wash their hands and keep safe.
