RonnieAdventure #0520 - Graceland, Memphis, Tennessee

When I made reservations to stay in "The Guesthouse" at Graceland, I was expecting a little 3-bedroom cottage next the mansion; so, I was surprised to find that the "Guesthouse" was substantially larger than the mansion and contained 450 guestrooms. Anyway, it was a nice place to stay. The name "Guesthouse" was just a little misleading.

To beat the crowds, we got up early in the morning and stood in line so we could be in the first group to tour Graceland mansion that day.

The museum complex consists of a number of interconnected buildings that represent different stages of Elvis's life. Lisa Marie even has her own "Growing Up Presley" area.

Throughout the complex are copies of the "TCB" logo that Elvis used extensively during his career. "TCB" stands for "Taking Care of Business," which was his motto.

Elvis loved automobiles and had a large collection of various makes and modals. During his lifetime, he donated at least 25 vehicles to family, friends, and complete strangers.

Apparently, Elvis and I get our cool moves and love of automobiles from our grandfathers - Elvis is my 10th cousin, once removed. One of his great-grandfathers, John Hawkins, was the brother of one of my  great-grandfathers, Robert Hawkins.

Some of the most famous quotes Elvis is remembered for are: "Life is too short to drive boring cars." "Ambition is a dream with a V8 engine." "If you let your head get too big, it'll break your neck." "When things go wrong, don't go with them." "It's not how much you have that makes people look up to you, it's who you are."

In the afternoon, we drove about 10 miles south of Graceland to see the Circle G Ranch in Mississippi that Elvis owned near Horn Lake (current population: 26,066). This is where Elvis and Priscilla spent their honeymoon after being married in Las Vegas, Nevada. During the first two years of their marriage, Elvis and Priscilla spent a lot of time at the ranch riding horses and just enjoyed being away from people.

Elvis sold the property in 1972 and the current owner plans to restore the house to the condition it was in when Elvis lived there.
