Red Cap Peak East gets its name from the red sandstone at the top of a white sandstone mountain. There is no developed hiking trail to the peak and very few people even try to climb up the mountain because it requires a lot of bushwhacking and rock scrambling to reach the top. However, since I'm running out of new blog adventures, we decided to give it a try. It was a nice trip, but if I were to do it again I would do the West Peak.
We started from the Sandstone Quarry Trailhead in Red Rock Canyon NCA and followed the Calico Tanks Trail to the base of the mountain. The canyon walls in this area were too steep to ascend without technical climbing equipment, so we walked around until we found a series of large cracks in the sandstone that we could use as a route to get to the peak. Since we were on the south-facing side of the mountain, and there were no clouds, we were happy that the temperature was in the low 50s when we started. This is definitely a winter or early spring trip!

Oops! There is a reason that I cover my camera lens with a $8.95 UV filter. My science experiment has demonstrated that rocks are harder than glass!
