RonnieAdventure #0351 - Snow Storm in Las Vegas

I was in California when Las Vegas experienced the first snow storm since 2008, so Kolohe sent me some pictures from the school where she teaches.

Arriving home the next day, the schools were closed because of the snow storm; so Kolohe and I drove out to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area (RRCNCA) to take some pictures. No one could figure out why they called off school the day after the blizzard, but Kolohe said it was nice to have the day off.

Since we arrived at RRCNCA before the crowds, we decided to drive around the 13-Mile Loop Road and stop at various points along the way to take pictures.

The Sandstone Quarry is always a great place to stop for pictures because there is a nice view of Turtle Head mountain in the background when looking to the north and the multi-colored escarpment when looking westward.

The highest point on the loop is 4,771 feet above sea level and provides some beautiful views when looking back toward Las Vegas.

The Lost Creek area is always a popular place to visit because of the number of hiking trails that leave from the picnic grounds. To continue up Rocky Gap Road require a four-wheel-drive vehicle, even when there is no snow on the unmaintained dirt trail.

For those that do not want to pay the entrance fee, or do not have a Golden Age Passport, there are nice views of Red Rock Canyon NCA available from an overlook on Nevada State Highway 159. However, it helps to have a telephoto lens on your camera.

The snow melted quickly in Las Vegas, so now we may have to wait another 10 years before the next snow storm!
