RonnieAdventure #0671 - "Chalk It Down," Las Vegas Arts District, Nevada

The Arts District in Downtown Las Vegas is an interesting place to visit.

About 25 years ago the area between Fremont Street and the Stratosphere consisted of mostly old commercial buildings with high vacancy rates and cheap rents, so artists started moving into the area and used the buildings for their art studios. As more artists moved to the area, cannabis shops, saloons and restaurants soon followed. Before long, young people started coming to the area in the evenings, which encouraged more commercial growth. With growth, comes problems. Now, the artists are complaining that rents in the Arts District are so high they are having a difficult time making enough money to survive and may have to move to a different location.

The City of Las Vegas has encouraged growth in the Arts District and often sponsors special activities on weekends. One weekend we attended the annual Chalk It Down festival featuring local street artists demonstrating their artistic talents by making chalk drawings on the sidewalks. It was an all-day event with food vendors, activities, and bands. It was a fun event and we may have to go again next year.
